NEW COLUMN: ASK THE SURGEON – QUESTIONS OUR PATIENTS
FREQUENTLY ASK
This is a new section that will appear with new questions with every update to
our web page. We have asked our doctors and our employees what questions they
are frequently asked by our patients, and have gone to the “experts”
to get the best answers for you. You may find questions you have asked yourself,
or have not thought to ask, that may be helpful to you. You are also invited to
send your questions by e-mail information@usurg.com
for personal answers. Questions that appear frequently in our e-mail, and other
selected questions, may appear on Ask the Surgeon .
Patient names will not be used. Questions must be of a general nature, and
the answers are not meant to replace direct contact with your doctor. As always,
for specific problems or treatment for medical conditions, your doctor is your
best source.
Oasis Wound Matrix: This product is used for the management
of deep and superficial wounds. It is a biologically derived matrix-based wound
product compatible with human tissue. Oasis is unique because unlike other collagen-based
wound care materials, it is a complex scaffold that allows restoration of host
tissue structure and function. There is no need to remove previous applied Oasis,
decreasing the risks for complications or infection to the wound.
Botox: Surgeons at University Surgeons are now using Botox
in the treatment of anal fissures. An anal fissure is a tear in the inside lining
of the wall of the anus, running from the outer margin of the exit directly upwards.
Botox acts by inhibiting muscle contractions of the internal anal sphincter causing
a decrease in pain as the anal fissure heals.
Mammotone: A unique biopsy device is now available
in our office that enables physicians to obtain the correct amount of breast tissue
for a definitive diagnosis without surgery. Samples of tiny abnormalities called
microcalcifications can be sampled allowing for breast cancer diagnosis at its
earliest, most treatable stage. MAMMOTOME® biopsy requires only local anesthetic
and can be performed in the office making the procedure quick and easy. Under
stereotactic or ultrasound guidance, the MAMMOTOME® probe is situated within
the abnormal area of the breast. Once in position, a vacuum system gently draws
tissue into a sample chamber. A rotating device cuts the small tissue sample and
sends it to a tissue collection area. Unlike traditional open surgical biopsy,
which requires a larger skin incision, or a core needle biopsy with multiple insertions,
the MAMMOTOME® Breast Biopsy System requires only a single insertion.
