DUCTOSCOPY

Advanced, Minimally-Invasive Surgery for the Detection and Biopsy of the smallest of Breast Cancer

Ductoscopy is a procedure that can be done in the surgeon’s office using a new microendoscopic instrument called a ductoscope.

It has long been known that breast cancer begins in the breast ducts years before a breast mass can be felt or seen on mammogram.  Using a local anesthetic on the breast, a tiny instrument is inserted through the duct itself.  No incision into the breast is done.  Through this instrument the surgeon can visualize the cells lining the ducts, and abnormalities can be noted.  If abnormal tissue is seen, a biopsy can be done.  This can alleviate the need for further surgery.  Treatment decisions can then be made based on the findings.

Common indications for this procedure include spontaneous or bloody discharge from the breast.

Darius S. Francescatti, M.D. of University Surgeons is one of the first doctors in the Chicago area to make this procedure available in his office. We are very happy to be able to offer the most advanced diagnostic and surgical treatments for breast cancer at University Surgeons.
