Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM)
A Minimally invasive approach to colon tumors and colon cancers

Patients with benign and malignant tumors of the rectum frequently require invasive, radical abdominal operations. Occasionally, some of these tumors can be removed through the anus. However, such exposure is limited and conventional instrumentation may not reach some of the polyps and cancers.

Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) solves these problems by means of its longer reach, special optics, and better exposure.

Consequently this technology provides:

  1. Access through the anus to tumors that are not accessible by other means.
  2. Many patients are spared an invasive, radical operation.
  3. Lower tumor recurrence rates may be obtained.
  4. Recovery after surgery is faster.

TEM is not widely available.  In fact, University Surgeons is only one of a half-dozen surgical practices that have performed this operation. Because of our expertise in this area, we have treated patients from all over the county and have lectured extensively on the technique.

The surgeons who do this procedure are:

            Marc I. Brand, M.D.

            Theodore J. Saclarides, M.D.

If you would like more information about this procedure, or if you would like to be evaluated to see if TEM can help you, we will be happy to see you.  Call us at 312-942-6500 to make an appointment.
