G.E.R.D – Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease

The esophagus is a long muscular rube that connects the mouth to the stomach. This tube travels behind the heart through the chest and into the abdomen (belly) to join with the stomach. The muscles of the esophagus help propel food into the stomach, which is why people can swallow even when they are upside down. As with all organs, many different diseases can affect the esophagus. Almost all problems with the esophagus lead to some type of pain and/or difficulty swallowing. The most common process involving the esophagus is reflux, which produces pain that people refer to as “heartburn”. The most serious problem involving the esophagus is cancer, which has increased during the past decade.
