Alexander
Doolas, M.D. is a graduate of the University
of Illinois Medical School and completed
his surgery residency in 1967 at Rush-Presbyterian-St.
Luke’s Medical Center. He served
as a Captain in the Medical Corps of
the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964.
Dr.
Doolas is the senior surgeon of University
Surgeons, and is well known for his
surgical expertise in complicated surgical
problems, hepatobiliary surgery, pancreatic
surgery, and esophagogastric surgery.
He has been Director of Undergraduate
Surgical Education here at Rush-Presbyterian-St.
Luke’s Medical Center from 1969
to 1992.
He is the Steven G. Economou, M.D.
Professor of Surgery, Past Associate
Chairman of the Department of General
Surgery, Immediate Past Dean of Surgical
Services and Sciences of Rush Medical
College, and Associate Vice President
of Medical Affairs. Dr. Doolas is the
Past President of the Chicago Chapter
of the American College of Surgeons,
and the Past President of the Chicago
Surgical Society.
Dr. Doolas has received many honors,
including the House Staff Award for
being the surgeon of the year on two
occasions, and the Phoenix Award for
Excellence in Medical Education in 1975
and again in 1986. In 1986, he was elected
by the United Hellenic Foundation of
America for the distinguished Greek-American
Award in the field of Medicine. Dr.
Doolas is the Director of the Presidential
Suite at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s
Medical Center.
In its 1996 edition on Best Doctors
in America, American Health Magazine
Dr. Doolas was chosen by his peers as
one of the best doctors in American
in the field of gastrointestinal surgery.
Chicago Magazine named Dr. Doolas
as one of the “Top Doctors”
in Chicago in its “Chicago’s
Best” issue in 2001.
